MBA Program

Legal Studies and Business Ethics offers a variety of MBA-level courses. Many count towards major requirements in other departments (see below); others supplement majors with in-depth knowledge of law or ethics.  Our courses help students to hone their critical thinking, reasoning, and judgment, which are useful in may problem-solving contexts.

Students are required to take one of the three core courses, which introduce them to important legal and ethical challenges they will face as business leaders.

LGST 6110 Responsibility in Global Management
LGST 6120 Responsibility in Business
LGST 6130 Business, Social Responsibility, and the Environment

Our elective courses focus on business law (and related areas such as regulation, governance and negotiation), business ethics (and related areas such as social responsibility and sustainability), or a combination of both.  Our faculty are engaged in cutting-edge research in these areas, including through the Zicklin Center for Governance & Business Ethics and the Wharton Initiative on Financial Policy and Regulation.

The study of law provides valuable insight into the business/government interface and public policy.  It also enhances students’ knowledge and skills in practical areas directly relevant to business transactions.  Familiarity with the law enables one to identify potential problems, seek appropriate counsel, and work more effectively with lawyers.

The study of ethics helps prepare students to address difficult business decisions where quantitative or empirical analysis alone is insufficient.  It positions students to evaluate individual and organizational obligations rigorously, and to take a coherent approach to moral or social questions in the contemporary global business environment.

The Legal Studies and Business Ethics Department also participates in the cross-functional major in Business, Energy, Environment and Sustainability (BEES) and the popular cross-departmental Negotiations course.
