OVERVIEW

Telecommunications, mass media, and the Internet represent not only significant forces in the economy, but also important influences on culture and society. Rapid change in the communications and media worlds is provoking significant re-evaluation of legal and public policy regimes. The Wharton Colloquium on Media and Communications Law (CMCL) brings together a small but diverse group of scholars in these converging fields to present and discuss research work in progress.

FORMAT

The goal of the meeting is to provide meaningful feedback for paper presenters, from a variety of perspectives. I have deliberately invited discussants from industry as well as various academic disciplines, reflecting the breadth and business relevance of this field. All participants will receive copies of the papers prior to the colloquium. Please read them beforehand, in order to provide effective commentary.

Each presenter will have 60 minutes assigned for his or her paper. As a general guideline, presenters should plan to use the first 15 minutes to introduce their paper and queue up areas where feedback would be particularly valuable, with the remaining 45 minutes set aside for discussion. Powerpoint or other formal presentation materials are discouraged, unless visual illustrations are particularly useful for the material. There is not a designated discussant for each paper; everyone should feel free to engage in the conversation.
